The story behind the story

The resilient Valiant • The famous ‘Trans-Aus’ Monaro GTS 350 wasn’t the only ‘Shell yellow’ touring car Norm Beechey raced in 1970. As it turns out, just as the Monaro survives to this day, so too does the E34 Valiant Pacer Series Production car which Beechey raced that year in the Sandown 3 Hour and the Bathurst 500. AMC caught up with the restored Beechey E34 Pacer at the National Motor Racing Museum at Bathurst, and got the story of its remarkable survival from the Mopar enthusiasts that saved the car.

Saved by a truckie • In this exclusive extract from Stefan Bartholomaeus’ brilliant new Allan Grice biography, ‘Gricey – the story of Allan Grice OAM’, Gricey recounts his return to racing Holdens in 1982 after the acrimonious bust up with BMW and Frank Gardner, and how the association with Alan Browne saved his career.

The Playboy Special • She was so perfect, a vision of such rare beauty, that no one can be truly sure whether she was real or just a dream...

The legend Part 3 • In this final instalment of our Dick Johnson Muscle Man feature, Dick reflects on his dalliance in NASCAR in the States, the switch from Sierras back to V8 Falcons in local touring car racing, the difficult final years of his driving career and the sometimes rocky road of full-time Supercars team ownership.

Going straight • What have Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, Bob Jane, Ian Geoghegan, Kevin Bartlett and Norm Beechey got in common? They all went drag racing at some point in their careers.

Ford LTD P5 Long wheelbase muscle • In 1973 Ford Australia launched a new and groundbreaking luxury car onto the market, the LTD. The original model – coded P5 – is the one most revered by Ford enthusiasts, mainly because it was powered by what amounted to a Falcon XB GT-spec 351 V8 Cleveland engine. The original P5 Ford LTD combined new standards of luxury for the Australian market with serious V8 grunt.
