Cold-blooded murder in Florida's "friendliest" retirement community—The Villages
In this John Grisham style mystery, Matt Royal, the retired lawyer-turned-beach-bum is called back into the courtroom to defend his girlfriend J.D. Duncan's Aunt Esther, who lives in the sprawling North Central Florida retirement community of The Villages. A best-selling author has been murdered after a book signing, and Aunt Esther has been arrested. Matt has a history with the local sheriff—one which may not bode well for his client.
Matt reluctantly suits up for the courtroom, and J.D. takes a leave from the police department to go undercover. A bizarre specter from the past haunts their investigation every step of the way.
As they delve further into the case, the pieces of the puzzle refuse to fall into any kind of coherent pattern. Jock Algren arrives with his special skill set to expose the real murderer and free Aunt Esther, but to no avail.
Not until the case goes to trial and the evidence is revealed does the truth emerge—and a strange kind of justice prevails.
The perfect blend of a Michael Connelly police procedural and a John Grisham legal thriller

A case of literary theft propels Griffin’s appealing 11th outing for semi-retired Longboat Key, Fla., lawyer Matt Royal (after 2016’s Mortal Dilemma). Aspiring mystery writer Esther Higgins, a 62-year-old resident of the Villages, a large planned retirement community in North Central Florida, makes the mistake of showing her unpublished manuscript to Ruth Bergstrom, the head of her book club, who has connections in the publishing world. Ruth discourages Esther, but secretly shares the manuscript with mystery author Olivia Lathom, who appropriates the text for her newest book, which becomes a bestseller. When Olivia is fatally shot at the Villages, where she has come for a book signing, the authorities charge Esther with murder. Since Esther is the aunt of Matt’s police detective girlfriend, J.D. Duncan, he agrees to represent her. J.D. goes undercover as a clerk at a local bookstore as part of the effort to prove Esther’s innocence. Matt will need all of his considerable skills to ferret out the hidden identities and relationships that are key to the solution to this well-plotted whodunit. -

In the 1970s, a stunningly beautiful young woman gives a ravishing performance of a Verdi aria at the Miss Georgia competition but loses to a baton twirler. The fix was in. Jump to modern times. A novelist lies murdered on a street in the Villages, the antiseptic retirement community in Central Florida. The accused is a woman who swears the novelist stole her manuscript. There's a connection between the present-day murder and the past scandal, and finding it is a job for Griffin's series hero, Matt Royal. His efforts to connect the jigsaw pieces make for fascinating reading, dulled somewhat by Griffin's soapbox ramblings (mainly encomiums to the military and blasts at the federal government).(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
