GAY TIMES

Issue 509
Magazine

This year we’ve seen LGBTQ+ people achieve remarkable things. We’ve seen queer joy, happiness and success. Queer people continue to cultivate community and connection – even if we are socially distanced. And queer people have brought a lightness to many lives outside of our community, as well as within it. If the world is going to chuck a pandemic at us, we queers aren’t going to back down and just accept defeat. We rise. Every single time.

“We have an enormous survival instinct,” says Russell T Davies in one of our cover stories for our Winter 2020/21 issue. “We do keep going, no matter what.” His new Channel 4 drama, It’s A Sin, follows a group of young friends growing up in London during the 80s. What the show so brilliantly portrays is that in the darkness of the HIV/AIDS crisis that loomed over them, they all still celebrated life. It’s a tenacity queer people have displayed this year too.

When it comes to celebrating, no-one got a bigger cheer this year than Shea Couleé when she was crowned winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 5. Black Excellence at its finest, we think you’ll agree. For her first ever solo cover feature, we spoke with the reigning queen about her incredible year.

What was also very welcome in 2020 was an album that could help us escape our worries to the dancefloors of yesteryear. One of our greatest icons and allies gave us just that. Kylie Minogue’s history- making 15th studio album DISCO pays homage to the genre while staying true to the star’s signature pop panache.

These three cover stories form part of our celebrations this year for GAY TIMES Honours 2020. Of course, we’d have liked to have brought you all together for a huge event like we’d initially planned back in early 2020, but we’re going to have to wait a little longer until it’s safe enough to do so. That being said, there was no way we could let the moment pass without recognising some truly inspiring individuals and organisations. From youth work, activism and vital support, to representation, empowerment, and elation, our Honourees have bettered the lives of LGBTQ+ people across the world. They have provided hope for those who have needed it during a challenging time. But most importantly, they have brought us joy. Their work has brightened up our lives, despite the circumstances we find ourselves in.

We can’t promise a better 2021, but what we do know is that no matter how uncertain things may feel, there will always be queer joy to be found.
