Nick Crandall feels like he doesn't belong anywhere. He never has felt like he belongs, really. He doesn't fit in this new family with his new foster parents, both of whom are professors. Lupica scores with unlikely heroes who encounter challenges on and off the field. Nick, who's adopted, finds that moving up to varsity baseball has its downsides. Pedro wants to please his hard-working father, but basketball and a class election could spell failure, not fame.
